Raymond Francois Hauptfleisch came to the law later in life — by choice, after building two other careers. He qualified as an educator first, spending years in the classroom before moving into human resources, where he managed workplace relations, employee discipline, retrenchments, and organisational compliance from the employer's side. He then built and ran his own business. Only after all of that did he pursue his law degree and complete articles to be admitted as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa.

That path matters. There is a meaningful difference between an attorney who moved straight from school to a law degree to articles — who has never managed a team, never sat in a disciplinary hearing, never felt the pressure of payroll, never had a contract dispute affect a business relationship they built from scratch — and one who has done all of those things before opening a legal textbook. Raymond is the latter.

When he chose to study law as a mature student, he felt exactly the same trepidation that his clients describe when they first pick up the phone. He didn't know how the system worked, he wasn't sure it would work for him, and he had real stakes — not a theoretical exercise. His time as a business owner means that when he tells you whether something is worth pursuing, that assessment comes from someone who has had to make those same calls with real money and real relationships on the line.
